What is TOLES Foundation Exam?

The TOLES Foundation exam is the entry-level exam in the TOLES suite of exams and is designed for individuals with basic legal English knowledge. The exam consists of three papers: a multiple-choice paper, a gap-fill exercise, and a writing paper.

TOLES exam suite

TOLES is an acronym that stands for ‘Test of Legal English Skills’. It is a standardized test designed to assess the English language skills of non-native English-speaking lawyers and law students. TOLES is a series of exams and is widely recognized by legal organizations and firms around the world as a means of assessing the English language skills of lawyers, law students, and other legal professionals.

TOLES is offered at three levels: TOLES Foundation (basic), TOLES Higher (intermediate), and TOLES Advanced (advanced). Each level is designed to test the candidate’s proficiency in a specific area of legal English, such as legal vocabulary, drafting legal documents, or understanding legal texts. The exam is offered by the TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) organization and is recognized internationally as a standard for measuring proficiency in legal English.

The exams are typically taken by law students and legal professionals, such as lawyers and paralegals, as a way of demonstrating their proficiency in legal English to employers and other stakeholders.

The TOLES exams were established in 2000 and are jointly owned by Cambridge Law Studio Limited and Global Legal English Limited.
